How Floor Vases are Made

The materials used in today’s floor vases vary. Classically-made floor vases are made with glass, ceramics or pottery materials, including terra cotta. Each of these materials gives the floor vases a unique style due to the individuality inherent in the materials used, but at the same time, those materials can also be quite delicate. With the introduction of plastics, fiberglass, poly resins and other man-made materials, the options available for floor vases are numerous in style, size and in durability.

How Vases Are Made Painting VasesModern floor vases are made in many ways, depending on the materials used and the styles involved, but most follow the same basic methods. Plastic and poly resin vases are typically made by warming up the material to a melting point and pouring it into a mold where it cools and hardens into a sturdy and practically indestructible vase. Both plastic and poly resin floor vases have abundant options when it comes to colors and the ability to include intricate details on the floor vases through the use of molds.

Fiberglass floor vases are created much the same way as using papier-mâché. Fiberglass material is molded around a “plug” into the desired shape and left to dry. From there, it is smoothed into shape by machine or by hand and then glazed or otherwise sealed to prevent the material from breaking down. Fiberglass is another durable material that is inexpensive and can be used to create beautiful patterns and colors on any floor vase.

Terra cotta is one of the oldest materials used to make modern floor vases. It is typically molded around a plug or thrown on a pottery wheel and left to dry or bake in an oven. Terra cotta clay is not as versatile as some of the man-made products in terms of detailed designs and it can be brittle. However, it is a beautiful and cost-effective way to decorate and gives any flower arrangement a natural, earthy feel.

How Vases Are Made - Terra CottaGlass vases can be made through various methods, but for floor vases, the most common method is through molds. Much like plastic or poly resin, glass is heated to its melting point and then poured into a mold and left to cool. Glass vases can be more expensive than vases created with man-made materials, but they also capture an elegance and simplicity that cannot otherwise be duplicated.

Floor vases are as varied as the materials and techniques used to create them. When choosing a floor vase, be sure to consider its purpose and placement within a home, garden, business or organization and match it with not only the environment, but also its function and level of durability.
